Mérida, Yucatán — Singer Gina Osorno embraces jazz, a musical genre that few Yucatecans have dared to interpret.

And thanks to her, live jazz music has caught on in Yucatán’s capital.

“I’ve been singing and creating songs for 15 years, because I’m also a composer,” says Osorno. “However, six years ago I became interested in jazz and that’s why I decided to be part of the Jazz Sensitive band, with the musician Mauricio Boffil; then I was in the Merida Big Band with great success, until I decided to form my first group that was initially called Jazz Talking, which became Gina Osorno & The Dreamers.”

The group is celebrating two years of making music with a jazz event 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 3, at El Cardenal Cantina, Calle 63 at 70, in Santiago.

Gina Osorno, who is also a graphic designer, says it was difficult to move away from her first profession to dedicate herself more fully to jazz.

She commented that she never thought that her jazz career would be as successful as it has been. Her audience is a mix of Meridanos and expats, particularly from north of the border.
