Man, 72, rescued after 5-day search in the hills of Chankom

For the second time this week, a Yucatecan grandfather was rescued by police after getting lost in the hills.

The 72-year-old man is doing fine after being rescued from in Chankom, a community in Xkalakdzonot, according to local media reports. The rescue followed an extensive search operation that lasted five days.

The senior citizen, named in reports only as “Macedonian PC,” left home around 2 p.m. Monday to collect firewood. When he failed to return, about 100 volunteers were joined by municipal and state police, firefighters and an SSP helicopter to locate the man. Even a canine squad failed to find him.

It wasn’t until Friday afternoon that Mecedonio was found, severely dehydrated. Police quickly assembled a makeshift stretcher made of branches and raincoats, gave him water and took him to an open road where SSP paramedics transported him by ambulance to the General Hospital of Valladolid.

Macedonian is expected to fully recover.

The same week, Aureliano Fernández Hernández, 70, was rescued in Tekax after spending 10 days lost in the hills.

He was found disoriented and dehydrated on a ranch, sitting on a stone under a tree.

Police officers carried the man two kilometers to a dirt road where a Red Cross ambulance was waiting.
