Carnival Cruise Line is sending more passengers from the U.S. to Progreso beginning next year.

Carnival Valor will shift from Galveston to New Orleans to begin year-round four- and five-day cruises from the Big Easy beginning in May. It will be the largest ship to offer a year-round short cruise schedule from that port.

On this route, four-day long weekend cruises depart Thursdays and visit Cozumel, while five-day voyages depart Mondays and Saturdays calling at Cozumel and Progreso.

“New Orleans is one of our most popular homeports and Carnival Valor is a wonderful short option,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

The 2,974-passenger Carnival Valor replaces Carnival Triumph and represents a nearly 10 percent increase in capacity on the line’s short cruise program from that port. Valor last year underwent a multi-million-dollar renovation that added a Guy Fieri Burger Joint, the Caribbean-themed RedFrog Pub and a SkyBox sports bar among other various watering holes. Other features on Carnival Valor include an adults-only Serenity Deck, a 214-foot-long water slide and Scarlett’s, a classic American steakhouse.

Meanwhile, the 3,646-passenger Carnival Dream will bring tourists from Galveston around the same time.

Five-day cruises depart Mondays and Saturdays visiting Cozumel and either Progreso or Costa Maya. That will represent a 22 percent increase in capacity on that program.

“Not only is Carnival Dream our largest ship to operate short cruises it also offers guests some truly spectacular onboard features and facilities following her extensive multi-million-dollar makeover,” Duffy said in a press release.

The Dream also recently underwent what the company called an “extensive” makeover that added a host of new food and beverage options, including a new eatery from Guy Fieri.
