President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will present his National Health Plan in Mérida today at the International Convention Center.
Official personnel has been here since Wednesday to work out the logistics of the visit. The president will arrive accompanied by Health Secretary Jorge Alcocer Varela.
The national director of the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers (Issste), Luis Antonio Ramírez Pineda, who is already in the capital of Yucatan, will be present along with his counterpart at the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), Germán Martínez Cázares.
Although he has made some statements, the president expected to more fully reveal how he plans to overhaul the country’s health system.
“In two years, a new health system to provide medicines and free medical care will be established throughout the country,” said Lopez Obrador.
He has explained that the national health program will start in eight states with a 25-billion-peso budget.
Yucatán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche and Quintana Roo are the first states in the rollout.
The president said that every six months another state will be integrated until the system is nationwide.
Unfinished or abandoned hospitals will be completed and operational under the plan. Thirty-five empty hospitals in the country include one in Ticul.
