Progreso artist wins prize at international body-paint festival

Progreso artist Edith Villanueva put Yucatán into a brightly colored orbit by winning third place at the World Bodypainting Festival in Austria.

The World Bodypainting Festival is an important competition in which hundreds of artists from around the world come together to captivate with their beautiful works.

Villanueva’s win came after competing against 110 participants in the Open Online distance category.

Her entry was titled “Microcosmos Viruses and Bacteria,” which took eight hours of work, plus an hourlong of photography and video session by Gabriel Moguel and Yamir Jatar Febles.

Edith says that her work was inspired by microorganisms in a miniature world, where characters are seen fighting viruses and bacteria.

Villanueva commented that she prepared for the challenge for a year, and experimented with the design for about four months.

In 2020, she won first place in the National Catrinas Body Paint Contest, organized by the Mega Procession of Catrinas in Mexico City.

For this month of October and November, Edith will participate with Grupo Cantares in a Catrinas show, for which she will be in charge of makeup.
