“You are our heroes,” said Yucatan Gov. Mauricio Vila Dosal as he inaugurated a display of blue lights along the arches of Progreso’s massive pier.

The lights, which will shine every Friday, are in recognition of health-care workers who have endured the coronavirus crisis.

“We know how difficult and complicated this pandemic has been for everyone, but especially for medical staff, who are human like everyone else, who can also get sick despite their fight for the health of others,” said Vila Dosal.

“We want to thank you for your work, commitment, understanding, courage and professionalism,” the governor added.

“Many of you are far from your families to avoid infecting them, but above all we know the great effort you make in your exhausting shifts when you have the medical equipment for protection against coronavirus that involves not being able to go to the bathroom, not having water and other awkwardness. For that reason, I want to thank these citizen heroes who are our medical staff.”
