Progreso’s health center ready for summer vacationers
Progreso, Yucatán — The local clinic is in overdrive for the summer holiday.
The Health Center with Expanded Services (CESSA) announced that they are working 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help tourists who need them.
El Centro de Salud con Servicios Ampliados, as it is called in Spanish, is being put to the test as summer tourists head to the beach.
Staff is trained to address any contingency likely to be encountered by vacationers, said Deputy Medical Director Ramses Moguel Mendez.
The clinic has state-of-the-art technology, including a cardiopulmonary resuscitator, x-ray machines and ultrasound. They coordinate with a network of hospitals for more serious cases.
But more likely, they are treating sunburns, heat stroke and dehydration, typical tourist complaints this time of year.
The clinic, at Calle 37 in the Nueva Yucalpetén area, cares for around 5,600 patients a month, even without tourists.
Their main constituency is residents of the fishing villages along the Gulf, often divers suffering decompression. They must be stabilized with oxygen, then channeled to the hyperbaric medicine unit of the Agustín O’Horán Hospital.
