About 400 restaurants affiliated with the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Food Industry (Canirac) in Yucatán will voluntarily post calorie counts in their menus.
Menus will also indicate the daily percentage those calories represent in a healthy diet.
Numbers will be applied to food items and non-alcoholic beverages.
This measure is the product of an agreement signed by the restaurant chamber with the Federal Commission for Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) as part of a battle against obesity and diabetes.

Yucatán is ground zero in Mexico’s obesity epidemic, and heart disease derived from diabetes is the leading cause of death in the state.
The National Chamber of the Restaurant and Food Industry also has a calorie counter on its website to help diners eat sensibly.
The first stage of this agreement will start officially next week under the supervision of federal health authorities.
