Mérida, Yucatán — The 2017 Yucatán Fair has concluded, and organizers say it was more successful than they expected.

More than 2.3 million people traveled to the fairgrounds at Xmatkuil in the city’s south. The fair brought in about 530 million pesos, 10 percent more than the previous fair, said officials.

That doesn’t include restaurant earnings, which amounted to 15 million pesos, an increase of 3 percent over 2016.

On the fair’s final day on Sunday, afternoon rain did not dampen spirits of 150,000 visitors at the annual extravaganza.

One visitor told Milenio Novedades that it was waiting more than an hour in line with her daughter to see the “Beauty and the Beast” show in the Coca Cola Castle.

The Yucatán Fair is the peninsula’s largest such event, and attracts visitors from multiple states.

At the fairgrounds, south of the Calle 50 exit from the Periférico, rides, games, livestock exhibitions and various stage shows ran daily, past midnight and then resuming again every morning at 8, for a little more than three weeks.
