Streets narrowed, traffic slowed around the convention center
Mérida, Yucatán — Drivers won’t zip past the new convention center the way they may have become accustomed.
Cross walks for pedestrians are being installed on avenidas Colon and Cupules as part of an overall modernization of the area.
Each street is losing a lane between Calle 60 and 62, another concession to walkers.
Between the sidewalk and street are metal pillars to protect the pedestrians and firmly define their space.
The new road design has annoyed and confused drivers, reports Sipse’s Milenio newspaper. But a road engineer told a reporter that fast-moving cars were dominating the block.
The state wants guests to feel safe exploring the area’s restaurants, shops and historic sites. El Centro Internacional de Congresos de Yucatán is set to open in December.
The block is also undergoing a greening, with at least 84 local species planted. Randomly placed electric pole and other obstacles are being relocated, as well.
