Tulum, Q. Roo — In 2008 the population of this municipality was barely over 10,000. Today, the growing tourist destination has 30,000 inhabitants and is adding 1,000 new residents every month. An additional 15,000 to 20,000 people living and working in Tulum comprise its floating population.

In 2012, Tulum overtook Playa del Carmen as the fastest growing city in Mexico.

The reason? The availability of jobs, mainly in construction, driven by Tulum’s booming tourist sector.

City authorities are responding to this influx by preparing to upgrade their Urban Development Plan. They have struggled to maintain an infrastructure to meet demand.

Tulum is on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán Peninsula and was the site of a Mayan port. From this remains a Mayan ruin with a picturesque, tropical beach backdrop.
