Mérida, Yucatán — Another nightclub was shut down after city authorities said it was in violation of Municipal Civil Protection regulations.
Vidente, which is Spanish for “clairvoyant” and plays off that theme in its promotions, has featured music and dancing on Calle 64 and 43 since opening in January.
But the cantina lacked a kitchen fire extinguisher, alarms, emergency lights and other safety equipment, according to city officials. Also, gas lines were not painted as required.
A patron on social media complained that the club didn’t seem well-ventilated during a salsa party.
But another commenter, apparently there for her birthday, commended the cantina for its festive atmosphere and great music.
Last week, the city closed two clubs on Calle 62 for similar violations. Pipiripau and the Mayan Pub are closer to the main square and routinely pack in customers.
The city has come under recent pressure to crack down on loud nightclubs in residential neighborhoods, but city authorities have insisted that this recent campaign has nothing to do with noise.
