The federal government approved an extension of the Mayan Train in Yucatán, said Interior Secretary Adán Augusto López Hernández.
An additional 50 kilometers of track will pass through industrialized Umán and the port city of Progreso, something that Yucatán has been asking for almost since the Mayan Train was announced.
Both destinations have industrial sites that would benefit from rail-based cargo delivery, and tourists would have one more way to access the coast under the revision.
López Hernández made the announcement at a ceremony to open a new textile plant in Muxupip, which operates in the historic henequen zone.
President Andrés Manuel Lopéz Obrador will announce the extension formally during his next visit to Yucatán, the interior secretary said.
The massive infrastructure project will link the peninsular states in an attempt to spread Cancun’s wealth to other, less-traveled places of interest. But objections from environmentalists, often with the backing of the judiciary, have put the Tren Maya project in doubt.
